Stanford Outdoor Supply has two B.O.S.S. Survival Kits worth checking out. The first is a 127 piece Fishing and Hunting Kit. The second is a 33 piece Fire Starting Kit. In previous posts, you’ll find articles on assembling a mini fishing kit and fire starting kit but I get the occasional request for a recommendation on a premade kit. It’s easier and sometimes more cost effective to buy a survival kit instead of gathering supplies and assembling one. I received the following two kits in exchange for a review.
B.O.S.S. Survival Kits – Hunting & Fishing
This kit is stocked with the basic essentials for fishing minus the fishing pole. The assumption is a stick can be found and made into a fishing pole using the L-screws (reel) and screw eyes (secure the fishing line up the length of the pole). Beyond the basics is a nylon stringer which can keep your catches alive until you’re finished fishing. The Yo-yo reel is a coiled line connected to a spring that automatically retracts when pulled on so it can be used for fishing or snare hunting. The other hunting items in this kit are a snare wire and the top of a slingshot. A base needs to be attached to the slingshot (Y shape stick is recommended). Measurements 8″ x 5″ and weighs 9.7 ounces.

B.O.S.S. Survival Kit – Fire
This kit is packed with 7 fire starters, 7 types of tinder, and processing tools. The fire starters include: lighter, matches, Ferro rod, steel wool (battery needed), foil (battery needed), fresnel lens, Flange bearing (to make a bow drill). The tinder includes: char cloth, candles, magnesium capsules, fatwood sticks, Tinder-quick tabs, Whitefire ball, and jute twine. The processing tools include: wire saw, pencil sharpener (making shavings), and a folding knife. It’s a well-rounded kit perfect for getting familiar with different fire starting techniques. I wasn’t sure if the wire saw would work so I used it to cut a 1″ tree branch. It held up and worked great cutting the branch in under a minute. Measurements 8″ x 5″ and weighs 8 ounces. Note: the wire around the lighter is to keep the button from accidentally being pushed in your pack.

3 Things I Like About the B.O.S.S. Kits
- a lot of supplies for an affordable price
- the kits are small enough to fit in a cargo pocket
- thorough & organized – each kit is geared towards specific survival tasks
The items in both kits seem to be fair quality and a great value. The survival instruction sheet that comes in each pack is helpful in explaining how to use some of the items in the kit like the snare wire. These B.O.S.S. Survival Kits are lightweight and easy to include in any bug-out bag or emergency car kit.
