Why a DIY Mini Air Cooler? I grew up in California, where the summers would get into the triple digits. Then moved to Idaho and bought a home that did not have central air conditioning. It shouldn’t matter that there’s no A/C, right? How hot can Idaho get? Not as hot as in California. But as it turns out, hot, no matter how hot, is just miserable!
For the summer, I live in the basement, where it is much cooler. My home office is not in the basement, and it would be nice to lower the temperature there during the summer to get some writing done. So I was on the lookout for creative ideas to keep cool. One idea I came across is the DIY Air Conditioner. These seem to be primarily for tents. I decided to make one to see if it would cool down in my small home office.
It was inexpensive to make. The cost was $11 to make because I already had the fan and batteries. It’s not pretty, but it (along with a stand-up fan) does help my 81 degrees office feel like 75 degrees. Compared to just a small fan, it’s an improvement. The truth is, it only lowered the room temperature by one degree. I consider this test a FAIL and will be purchasing a window air conditioner while saving up to install central air conditioning. A good article. It just goes to show “there are more than one way to skin a cat”. I have made and have used several of the designs shown in this post. I have found the larger the ice chest the longer your DIY AC will cool before needing to be “recharged” with ice or frozen water bottles.
