3 Protection Preps for Under $10

Have you added protection preps to your emergency supplies? A woman I know was walking in what she believed was a safe neighborhood when a car drove past her and stopped suddenly. Two guys jumped out and headed toward her. She pulled her pepper spray out and then speed-dialed a friend. After seeing her hold up pepper spray and hearing their descriptions given over the phone, one guy turns to the other and says, “it’s not worth it.” The two dirtbags got back in their car and drove away.

I’m so thankful for her good sense to be prepared. I get sick thinking about what would have happened if she hadn’t been. Bad guys are usually looking for an easy target. DON’T BE THAT EASY TARGET!

Below are three frugal ideas on Protection Preps: Bargain Hunting, UpCycle, and a DIY Project.

DIY Project – Make Your Own Pepper Spray

When Argentina’s economy collapsed in 2001, crime became a real problem. Pepper spray became a high-demand commodity that was completely sold out in every store according to an Argentina citizen, Fernando Aguirre.

Recipe:
2 Tbs of Cayenne Pepper
1 Tbs of Black Pepper
6 Tbs of Lemon Juice
2 Tbs of Water
2 Tbs of Oil

Mix the first 4 ingredients thoroughly and strain (use a coffee filter for best results). Add oil and then mix thoroughly again (I added a lid to the container and shook it for a couple of minutes). I first tried it in the little blue spray bottle you see in the picture above. Since I did not have a coffee filter, it was too coarse and would not spray out of the bottle. I got a larger spray bottle you see in the picture below, and it worked great!

Cost:
$0 Oil – Use any food-grade oil around your house, or you can just use water
$1.00 Lemon Juice – Dollar Store (you can use rubbing alcohol instead)
$3.33 Cayenne Pepper – Walmart
$1 Squirt Bottle – Walmart or Dollar Store

UpCycle

Find an old bat in your garage or at a yard sale. The bats were purchased for $3 (wood) and $10 (metal) at a yard sale. You can pick one up on eBay for around $10. A bat is basically a club, and clubs have been used for centuries as a weapon (cops use them today, they’re called batons). Bats are a great protection weapon, and the best part is you don’t need a concealed carry permit to pack one under the seat of your car. If our society ever gets hostile, turn your bat into a Morning Star Death Club by taking long nails and nailing them into the bat. Remember, the goal is not to look like an easy target. I don’t think any Home-Invader will mistake you for an easy target when you are welding a Morning Star Death Club.

Search the web for FREE Self-Defense Training

Start your prepper family defense plan by practicing self-defense moves together. There are many free self-defense resources on the internet. Check out these three self-defense training YouTube videos here and here.

As some protection preps to your bug-out bag. Make a self-defense technique cheat sheet. You can find illustrations by searching google for images. Next to each technique write a description of the move. It’s a good reminder to practice them throughout the week. I keep a copy of my self-defense cheat sheet in my bug out bag as well. If I ever get evacuated to a shelter, I will probably be happy for something to do to pass the time.
