Weapons Used

Shooting sports are conducted with the use of either firearms or airguns. Whether a firearm or an airgun is used, there are three distinct categories of weapon that are used; shotguns, rifles and handguns. Handguns are fired in two different sub-categories; revolvers and pistols. The most common handguns in shooting sports are semi-automatic pistols and revolvers.

Rifles and shotguns are similar in that they are both long guns that require the shooter to use both hands when firing. These weapons are typically braced against the shoulder to steady them for more precise shooting. Bolt action and semi-automatic rifles are most commonly used in shooting sports. When it comes to shotguns, semi-automatics and over/under break action are the weapons of choice for shooting sports enthusiasts.

Different Shooting Sport Disciplines

There is a wide range of different gun shooting sport disciplines. Each discipline has it’s own distinct set of rules that participants must follow to succeed. Understanding the differences between each shooting sport will help you to choose the activity that best meets your interests and skill level.

Bullseye Shooting

Bullseye shooting is a discipline available to both handgun and shotgun shooters. The centre of the target is the ‘Bullseye’ and shooters must aim to hit the target as close to the middle of the target as possible with each shot. Precision is the objective and shooters must control their breath and maintain excellent trigger control while lining the target up in the sight.

Field Shooting

Field shooting, also known as Terrain shooting covers a range of different sub-disciplines that shoot rifles or pistols. Typically, field shooting takes place at ranges that are temporarily erected for the event. Distances to the targets are generally varied and sometimes are undisclosed. Field shooting requires shooters to be able to deal with varying conditions and targets of different distances.

Rapid-Fire Shooting

Rapid-fire shooters use either handguns or rifles. Rapid-fire events can take different formats, however, they usually involve the weapon being holstered before a fast draw is made and the weapon is fired at a target or series of targets at a particular or varying distance.

Other Types Of Sport Shooting

In addition to those disciplines listed above, there is a range of other types of sport shooting types that are also popular. Clay pigeon or skeet shooting is a popular shotgun discipline while running target, practical shooting, long-range, benchrest, metallic silhouette, muzzle loading, western shooting, para-shooting, contests using service firearms and plinking are other disciplines of sport shooting that are popular with different groups of shooters.
